Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve
Sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve is one of the most popular and effective weight loss operations that was first performed in 1993 in Australia.
​
It is a restrictive bariatric operation, in which a portion of the stomach is been removed. The remaining stomach becomes sleeve shaped and has a very small capacity for food.
​
After the operation the obese patient can eat less food, and additionally has less hunger. This is because the “hunger hormone” Grehlin is diminished from the circulation as a consequence of gastric fundus removal.
​
There isn’t any malabsorption of nutrients, and there is no need for dietary supplements whatsoever.
​
The Procedure
The operation is performed in a minimal invasive manner, laparoscopically or robotically.
​
During this procedure we remove the portion of the stomach that acts like a reservoir for food (large curvature) and we leave intact the portion of the stomach that acts as the food passage (lesser curvature).
​
The result is a new smaller stomach, which has the shape of a sleeve, or a tube.
​
Gastric sleeve has no foreign bodies inside, and the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients are perfectly normal after the operation.
​
In this way the obese patient, consumes less food, has no hunger and loses a large amount of weight very fast.
Weight Loss Results
Gastric sleeve offers great results. The weight loss that can be achieved is up to 95-100% of the excessive body weight.

As in all restrictive procedures half of the weight loss is achieved during the first six months after the gastric sleeve and the rest is lost after one more year.
​
Eating is normal after the operation and for life. No dietary supplements and no medical observation or follow up are needed.

Gastric sleeve or laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy (LVSG) is done in a minimal invasive way (laparoscopic or robotic procedure). We use 3 or 4 small 5mm incisions through which we remove part of the stomach and turn the rest of it to a sleeve, leaving behind no incisions or scars. In this way, gastric sleeve has no postoperative pain and the esthetic result is excellent.

2. No postoperative adjustments – Small follow-up period
Gastric sleeve works perfectly right from the beginning. Weight loss starts from day one and we don’t need any post-operative adjustments. The follow up period is very short.
The patient has to spend approximately 10 days near our medical attention, 3 or 4 in the hospital and the rest in an outpatient basis in a hotel or nearby resort. In this postoperative period we can arrange a very pleasant vacation plan. After this period, the patient is free to return back home or continue visiting other beautiful destinations in Greece.

3. No foreign bodies inserted
In gastric sleeve we don’t have to put any foreign bodies inside like in gastric banding (Lap Band).

4. Hunger regulating operation
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is primarily a restrictive procedure, but also has another mechanism of action. This is by regulating hunger. The portion of the stomach that is removed (gastric fundus) is responsible for the production of Grehlin, the “hunger hormone”.
When this is removed, the hormone diminishes from the circulation, resulting in loss of appetite and hunger in these patients.

5. No nutrient malabsorption
The peptic pathway remains intact in gastric sleeve, and the digestion of food and essential nutrients and vitamins remains unaffected. So there is no need for taking nutritional supplements, minerals, vitamins etc.
